How to calculate print size

  1. Enter the image width and height in pixels, or read them from a local JPEG or PNG file. Choose a target PPI to see the print size in centimeters, millimeters and inches.
  2. To plan a new image, enter the paper dimensions and target PPI. The calculator rounds each required pixel dimension upward.
  3. To check an existing image, enter both sets of dimensions and choose Fit with borders or Fill and crop. Compare the effective PPI, borders or crop with your target.

Understanding print resolution

Print width in inches equals pixel width divided by PPI. At 300 PPI, 3000 × 2000 pixels spans 10 × 6.67 inches, or 25.4 × 16.93 cm. A4 at 300 PPI needs at least 2481 × 3508 whole pixels because each axis is rounded up.

A 4 × 6 inch photo needs 1200 × 1800 pixels at 300 PPI. A 10 × 15 cm photo needs 1182 × 1772 pixels. Those sizes are close but not identical.

Fit preserves the whole image and may leave borders. Fill covers the page and discards image edges. Effective PPI uses the image scale, not empty paper. The crop diagram is centered and illustrative.

Changing a DPI metadata tag without resampling adds no pixels. Printer dots (DPI) differ from image pixels per inch (PPI). Meeting a PPI target alone cannot guarantee sharpness, focus, compression quality, color or final print quality.
